Bean Creek (Scotts Valley)
Scotts Valley is a very nice Santa Cruz Mountains community just above Santa Cruz.  It's located
amongst towering trees, cliffs, and steep hillsides.  That's why finding ancient sea life there is absolutely
amazing!!   The following are the directions to the Bean Creek Sand Dollar site.  This is a great place
for all fossil enthusiast but especially for kids.  The fossil there is the SAND DOLLAR and they are
everywhere!  You can find themm by sifting through the sand at the base of the road cut or you can
GENTLY remove them from the hard formation above the lose sand. **This site is getting smaller by
the day so please only take a few good specimens and leave the rest for others.  To get there take
Hwy 17 south from San Jose toward Santa Cruz.  Take the Mount Harmon Exit in Scotts Valley.  Turn
right onto Scotts Valley road (or BLVD).  Take the first left which is Bean Creek Road.  Go down that
road a little over a mile until you see the road cut pictured above.  There are 1 or 2 other road cuts
you will past first but this one will have a huge place to pull your car over across the road and it is the
last road cut before the road narrows and you reach a stop sign.

Caution!!!!  This site is right off of a road.  It is not a busy road but cars do come by so be very careful
if you have kids with you.  Also alway be careful for the potential of falling when you go up a road
cut.
